I listen to WRVO quite a bit when driving. The other day they aired a piece on being an only child, pros and cons. I am an only child, and I’ve been asked what that’s like my entire life. I don’t really think much of it. It is what it is. People have asked me if I miss not having siblings. I don’t really know since I’ve never had them.
The radio show went on to say that some only children are maladjusted and fall behind in school. I do not agree with this at all. I excelled in school, and had a 4.0 GPA in college. I had friends, good friends. There was no maladjustment as far as I can see.
I did wholeheartedly agree on one point: the speaker went on to talk about the pressures of being the only child. Pressure to succeed, pressure when parents have health problems and begin to age. I worry about the future when my parents can no longer care for themselves. There will be no sibling(s) to share in the struggles. Of course, I could have had a sibling who refused to help at all or perhaps we wouldn’t get along. In that case, I think being an only child is a blessing. There is also the pressure that I will never carry on my family linage. I cannot have children due to health issues, so there really is nothing I can do about this, and my parents realize this, but in the back of my mind there is some guilt because my linage will die. There will be no one to carry it on.
So yeah, it’s an interesting topic. Pros and cons to both sides.
